RAAF Amberley

Flowcrete Australia has completed a 5,000 square metre flooring project at the Royal Australian Air Force’s (RAAF) largest base, Amberley - located 8 km southwest of Ipswich, Queensland. 

Currently home to No. 1 Squadron, No. 6 Squadron, No. 33 Squadron and No. 36 Squadron, RAAF Amberley employs more than 5,000 military and civilian staff and has recently undergone a multi-million dollar re-development program to make it the super-base of the RAAF, operating flights of F/A-18F Super Hornets, F-35 Lightning II, KC-30A and the C-17 Globemaster.

Part of the redevelopment program included replacement flooring in the existing RAAF No. 33 Squadron Aircraft Maintenance Facility, which is used to house, repair and service military aircraft. 

A high performance flooring system was a must, offering the technical profile needed to protect the concrete substrate from inevitable chemical spillage, aviation fluid, heavy loads and impact.

Having removed the previous floor coating material, repairs were first made to the concrete substrate using Flowtex F1 Repair Mortar. 

This was followed by the application of a custom system, built up to meet the specific needs of the RAAF - Flowshield SL, Flowcoat SK and Deckshield UV – in a striking white shade.

The custom system - installed at 3 mm in phases over a four week period - was chosen by the client due to its high chemical resistant, light reflective and UV resistant properties. 

Line marking was later applied in contrasting shades of yellow, red and green to denote working zones and regulate traffic movement within the Aircraft Maintenance Facility.
